the summer camp hero.
camp counsellor
Every day at camp as a Camp Counsellor will be an adventure. You’ll laugh and learn more than you could ever imagine, while making memories that will turn out into fun and interesting stories to tell everyone once you are back home.
As a Counsellor, you’ll likely share camp cabins, or different sleeping spaces with your designated group of kids and your co-counsellors. You will not only be a role model to the campers, but you will also contribute with a variety of skills and ideas to make your camp have their best summer yet.
your role
You’ll be looking after 6-12 campers by taking them to meals and different activities throughout the day - and joining in the fun! You’ll participate in all the different activities and encourage kids to take part of them. While getting to know the campers, you’ll learn about their interests, fears, and motivations. This will allow you to help them at moments when they are feeling homesick or unmotivated.
As a Camp Counsellor, you’ll also help the camp staff plan activities such as evening programs, or rainy day activities. This is where you can let the creativity in you take over! It’s up to you to bring up the energy and enthusiasm to make tasks fun and exciting for the kids.
Camp is incredibly fun with lots of adventure and new memories being made every single day. Many of the campers have been waiting all year to go back to camp and see their friends, meet new people, and have the time of their lives.
Whether you notice it or not, you will have a meaningful impact on kids’ lives. Many of them see camp as their second home, a place where they go every summer to learn new skills, gain confidence, and grow as people having you as a mentor.
summer as a counsellor
As a Camp Counsellor, you’ll get to have an unforgettable summer working in the Canadian wilderness. You can experience a side of Canada that not many have the opportunity to - away from the city noise with some of the most beautiful Canadian landscapes as your “office view.”
You’ll make a second family at camp. By living in, what we like to call, a camp bubble, you’ll be creating amazing memories with local staff and people from all around the world. These are friendships that will last a lifetime and will give you a reason to travel and visit your new friends after camp.
Being a Camp Counsellor is one of the most rewarding jobs you’ll ever have - but it certainly is a lot of hard work. You’ll be working very hard and camps are aware of this. So they make sure you get enough time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your time off.
During this time, you are free to go to a town nearby, go on a hiking adventure, take a day trip to explore Canada, or simply stay in bed and recharge. Depending on the camp where you are placed at, your time off will vary. Most camps, for example, will give you a full day off every week. You are not required to leave camp site during this time, so this can also be a great opportunity to try a variety of camp activities just for fun. Take a canoe to the lake, go horseback riding, or face your heights fear by trying the high ropes! There’s always fun activities to try at camp.
why should you work as a camp counsellor?
Being a Camp Counsellor is so much more than just a summer job. It's a chance to learn about yourself, make incredible friendships that will last you a lifetime and to make a huge positive difference in some young kids lives.
Helping your campers through their low points and seeing them succeed more than they ever thought they possibly could is the most rewarding experience I've ever had.
